'King' of all beach parties
On Bank Holiday Sunday (August 30), the heart of Wigan's club land, King
Street, will be transformed into the biggest beach party the borough has
ever seen.
From 5 p.m. live music, competitions and beach activities will be taking
place, including a surf board simulator and limbo competition.
A temporary beach will be created on the street and live bands will be
playing until Midnight. The playlist will be announced at a later date.
To tantalise the taste buds, local eateries will be providing hog roasts
and barbeques on King Street.
Entrance to the event is free, however there will be a charity collection
taking place and Hawaiian leis will be given out to the first 3,000 revellers
that donate a £1 as they arrive.
Mike Matthews, Town Centre Manager said: "This is a partnership initiative
and will be a real achievement. The fact that this event is taking place
is a testament to the commitment of the Council, local businesses and the
police to the town centre.
"It is going to be a fantastic event and hopefully the first of many
to take place on King Street. We are in talks with some major sponsors who
are interested in investing in the event. We will announce those as and
when they come on board."
Stacey Penney, General Manager, Liquid and Envy said: "The venues
in Wigan town centre and throughout the borough have undoubtedly felt the
effects of the economic downturn, with more and more people opting for a
night in rather than a night out. We are hoping that the Beach party will
welcome revellers back to King Street and allow them to enjoy themselves
and relive holidays gone by."
Further details of the event will be released in the forthcoming weeks,
so watch this space!
